Want a custom playlist of rad music?

What a time it’s been.

I don’t use this website much anymore, because I’ve moved Particles and Waves (along with the rest of my life) to Vancouver, where CiTR has been kind enough to let me continue doing the radio show I love. I was overjoyed to start back up again this past fall, and I plan to keep doing this show for a long time.

The reason I’m able to get on the air every week and chatter at you all about music is because CiTR, like my previous station, is a non-profit. We do not accept paid advertisements, we do not have corporate sponsors, we’re not part of the Jim Pattison group. Not a single one of the hosts are paid a cent for their time or effort; we do this out of love of music and community and you, our listeners.

And every year, we hold a fundraiser called Fundrive, and we try to raise a little cash to keep making radio even better. The time has come; Fundrive is March 9-17, 2017.

What does this have to do with me?
Excellent question, reader! I’ve been asked to raise $150 minimum; our ultimate goal is $40,000. This year, the money will be going towards our theme, “Shape Your Media”, which will include new training for hosts in broadcasting, audio production, and music writing for our magazine, Discord. You can donate as much or as little as you’d like, but we’ve got some really fabulous prizes and/or the promise of a tax receipt if you donate $25 or more.

BUT HERE’S THE DEAL: As in past years in Victoria, I’ve decided to sweeten the pot a little. If you donate $20 or more, I will make you a custom music playlist. It’ll be either through Dropbox or through Spotify—we can discuss the nitty-gritty later—but it will be a custom curated mix, with a combination of old favourites as well as songs that have never been played on Particles and Waves. $20 is two albums on iTunes; it’s a few coffees at Starbucks, or a couple of drinks out on the town. For CiTR, it’s much much more.

HOW DO I GET THIS SWEET PRIZE?

The rules at CiTR are a little bit different. Unlike in past years, the only way to receive my show-specific prize is the donate by calling the pledge line during Fundrive, at (604) 822-8648 or (604) UBC-UNIT. I apologize to my international listeners, but this is due to how UBC processes online donations and is totally out of my hands. With that said, I am even more eager to create the best possible playlists as a reward!

If you’d still like to donate anyway, and earmark the money for my show, you can do so by going to the CiTR Donate page.

Please let me know if you have questions by emailing mia [at] miasteinberg [dot] com, or hitting me up on Twitter. Thank you in advance for your generosity and your love.

– Mia

Track List – October 25

I was really proud of this show. I hope you guys enjoyed it! I plan to make classical music a semi-regular part of future broadcasts, so keep an ear out for that.

Carl Nielsen on The Sanguine:

I have tried to sketch a man who storms thoughtlessly forward in the belief that the whole world belongs to him, that fried pigeons will fly into his mouth without work or bother. There is, though, a moment in which something scares him, and he gasps all at once for breath in rough syncopations: but this is soon forgotten, and even if the music turns to minor, his cheery, rather superficial nature still asserts itself.”
